The Importance of Native Language for English Learners
Caitlin Franco serves as the founding executive director of Equality Charter School, a sixth to 12th grade program located in the Bronx. Caitlin Franco launched Equality Charter School in 2008 with the mission of providing a high-quality education to underserved students. The school prioritizes students who are learning English as a second language.
Research shows that English language learners (ELLs) benefit significantly from continuing their development in their native language. For example, if children learn a concept in their native language, they can transfer their knowledge on the topic when they discuss it English.
Learning how to read and write in their native language also boosts their literacy skills in their second language. If students are encouraged to use their mother tongue in the classroom, it can lead to an increased sense of belonging, a stronger interest in school, and cultural pride. The non-English speaking parents of ELLs may also be more engaged, as they can contribute directly to their children’s learning.
