Windward School - Basic Writing Skills Training Program

Caitlin Franco is the Founder and Executive Director of the Equality Charter School in the Bronx, New York. Beyond her work with the school, Caitlin Franco has completed several certifications and training programs, including Basic Writing Skills Training through the Windward School.

Started in 1988, the Windward School features several programs and courses to help educators improve their skills, including the Basic Writing Skills Training program. The Basic Writing Skills program includes lectures and workshops that give participants a well-rounded learning environment. Focusing on expository writing, this program includes instruction in basic sentence structure along with revising, editing, and the proper composition of paragraphs to provide clarity in writing.

The training provided in this program can be used by K-12 educators, including those working in both special education and general classroom settings. Completion of the program allows participants to receive national certification for the course and meets the requirements for several organizations, including the International Dyslexia Association’s Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading.

Girls to Women Video

Equality's female empowerment group, Girls to Women, went to a conference to improve their skills. After they returned from the conference, they held a Town Hall Meeting where they had led a deep discussion turn keying the information they learned at the conference to other scholars. This was then followed by an interactive activity that allowed our ECS girls to value themselves and each other.

Durst Visit

Thank you to John Mongello & Rose Manco for hosting our high school scholars on a tour of the Durst Organization!

Durst organization is a family business that has cornered the real estate market for utilizing natural resources to support their properties.  During their visit, they toured the Bank of America Tower located in Times Square with the VP of Building Services, John Mongello.

The Durst organization has a greenhouse, and a beehive where they harvest honey and provide to their tenants.  John Mongello was very warm, inviting, and receptive to our young people, he answered all their many questions with ease and took the scholars to lunch.

The scholar takeaways were potential internship opportunities for advanced seniors, learning about environmental friendly procedures, and becoming successful with hard-work.

Thank you for the wonderful visit!
